Xestro vs Gentu Cost Comparison
Generated on 10/17/2025 at 10:39:31 PM
When transitioning from Genie to a cloud-based practice management system, practices typically compare Xestro and Gentu.
While both serve the specialist market, Xestro offers a far more comprehensive feature set and holds the strongest reputation in the industry for support and reliability.
Cost is, and should always be, a key consideration. Gentu is currently offering steep — and likely unsustainable — temporary discounts.
This calculator is designed to provide a realistic, long-term comparison of the year-on-year costs of running Xestro versus Gentu.
To provide the most accurate like-for-like comparison, this calculator includes both licence costs and Eclipse costs, each of which is charged differently by Xestro and Gentu. This ensures a comprehensive view of your total software investment.
Transparent Pricing
Xestro is the only one of the major practice management systems that consistently publishes its licence pricing on its website. Every Xestro client receives the same best available rate — there are no hidden discounts or preferential pricing arrangements. This ensures fairness, transparency, and long-term trust.
Xestro's Market Advantage
Xestro offers a far more comprehensive feature set than Gentu and maintains a strong focus on developing new in-built functionality rather than relying on external integrations. Despite offering superior capabilities, Xestro remains more cost-effective in the long term. Gentu has attempted to draw Genie customers across through an aggressive discounting strategy that is unlikely to be sustainable over time.
Licensing Model
Xestro's concurrent user licence model — the same structure used by Genie — more accurately reflects real practice activity than Gentu's per-user model, which charges regardless of how much each user accesses the system.
With its broader feature set, clear commitment to ongoing in-house development, and transparent pricing, Xestro represents the more capable and cost-effective choice for practices in the medium to long term.
Practice management software is typically a long-term commitment. Understanding your anticipated usage timeframe helps contextualise the cost comparison.
Gentu often offers temporary discounts to attract Genie customers. Understanding the discount period is crucial for accurate long-term cost comparison.
Many Gentu offers include discounted rates for an initial period (commonly 1-3 years), after which pricing returns to standard rates. The length of this discount period significantly impacts the break-even analysis and long-term cost comparison.
If you're being offered steep discounts, ask: "Is Gentu prepared to give a written commitment to honour the full discount for the entire period offered?"
Enter the number of years Gentu has committed to providing discounted rates (typically 1-3 years). This will automatically adjust the discount structure in the pricing tables below.
How Xestro and Gentu Charge Differently
Xestro charges like Genie: Both use concurrent (simultaneous) usage licences where all staff share licences. You only need enough licences to cover the maximum number of users logged in at the same time. This charges based on activity in the practice.
Gentu charges differently: Each individual practitioner and staff member requires their own dedicated licence, regardless of how frequently they use the system. This charges based on number of staff on the books.
Why This Matters
Xestro's concurrent licensing model (like Genie's) is inherently more cost-effective in the long term because you're paying for actual system usage rather than every individual on your books. This naturally scales with your practice's real needs and activity levels, making Xestro more economical over the typical life of your practice management system relationship.
Note: A 'practitioner' in Gentu is equivalent to a 'provider' in Xestro — an individual who, amongst others, bills in their own right.
Comparing Like for Like
To provide you with the most accurate like-for-like quote between Xestro and Gentu, we need three key numbers:
- Total number of licences you pay for in Genie — this is the number of licences that you currently buy from Genie (and will be equivalent to the number of Xestro licences that you will use)
- Total number of Practitioners / Providers — individuals who provide clinical services in their own name and bill in their own name. Include every individual practitioner even if they are part-time (e.g., a doctor and a one-session-a-week doctor count as 2 doctors)
- Total number of other staff — anyone who does not provide clinical services in their own name and doesn't bill in their own name. For example, if the RN in the practice does not bill in their own name, they are counted under 'Admin' by Gentu. Gentu has a tier called 'allied health practitioners' which are charged more than 'admin' staff but less than 'practitioners'; for simplicity's sake, just add each of them to the 'other' group. Note: As allied health practitioners are charged at a higher rate in Gentu, adding them to these numbers actually underestimates the cost of Gentu compared to Xestro.
Important: Count each staff member individually, NOT full-time equivalent (FTE) staff. For example, 2 part-timers who job-share are counted as 2 staff members.
Terminology Differences
Practitioners vs Billing Providers: Gentu refers to healthcare providers as Practitioners, while Xestro uses the term Billing Providers.
All Other Staff: For licence billing purposes, Gentu categorises all non-practitioner staff — including practice managers, nurses, and receptionists — under the term Admin User.
Allied Health Tier: Gentu has an additional 'Allied Health' tier that we haven't incorporated for simplicity's sake (but we can provide calculations if needed).
Xestro charges licences similarly to Genie, so this will be the number of licences we will quote for Xestro.
Data Sources and Methodology
Xestro's pricing is publicly listed on our website. Because Gentu does not publish pricing publicly, the Gentu rates and discount structures shown in this calculator are based on multiple trustworthy third-party sources. We present these figures in good faith as the most accurate information available at the time of publication.
Gentu's discount offers may vary between prospects. If your Gentu quote differs from the rates shown, you can edit the discount percentages in the pricing tables below. If you have received significantly different base rates, please contact us at sales@xestro.com so we can update our data.
For multi-year comparisons, this calculator assumes both vendors apply an annual CPI increase of 2.5%. Actual price increases may vary.

Annual Cost Comparison Over 5 Years
Total Cost of Use (5 Years)
You've indicated that you anticipate using your new software for 5+ years. This calculator has shown you what the cost differential between Xestro and Gentu is over the long term.
Break-Even Point Analysis
Based on Gentu's temporary discount period of 1 year, the break-even point occurs at 1 year and 5 months.
Before 1 year and 5 months: Gentu appears cheaper due to temporary discounts
At 1 year and 5 months: Cumulative costs are equal
After 1 year and 5 months: Xestro becomes cheaper to run indefinitely. Once the break-even point is reached, Xestro will continue to be more cost-effective for as long as you use the software, with the savings gap widening over time.
The above calculations show that even with the short-term discounts offered by Gentu, Xestro works out to be significantly more cost-effective, saving you a total of $31,667 over a 5-year period.
Beyond Cost: The Complete Picture
Xestro's concurrent user licence model—like Genie's—is a better reflection of actual practice activity than Gentu's per-user model, which charges regardless of usage. This fundamental difference in approach means you're paying for what you actually use, not for every person on your books.
Beyond the cost advantages demonstrated above, Xestro also offers a far more comprehensive feature set, has a stronger focus on developing in-built functionality, and is the more cost-effective option in the medium to long term.
